The National Celebration of Saami People "The XVIII Traditional Saami Games"

6 september, 2014, Murmansk region


For nearly 20 years in Kola area of Murmansk region in September in the place of compact living of Saami people the celebration at regional level – The Saami Games – is held.

The organizers prepare extensive programme of competitions in traditional Saami kinds of sports.

Everyone may take part in activities and try one’s hand at throwing a lasso on a deer, jumping over a sledge, crossbow shooting, fishing in traditional Saami way – "by the can". The highlight of the competitions is Saami women football.

On that day in Loparskaya an exhibition and fair of items produced by masters of decorative and applied arts from various cities and areas of the region will take place as well as holiday trade of items of native Saami crafts. By all means, on that day guests of the celebration will be treated to traditional fish-soup (ukha) from salmon that everyone may taste.
